You will receive 1-on-1 mentorship from Holmen and Naval Academy grads, an opportunity to get outside of your comfort zone, and travel to one of the most beautiful and historic college campuses in the world. John knew the Naval Academy had to be the destination for Holmen kids because believed in the community and culture instilled in Holmen students. He knew there was something right about what we do in Holmen and what they do at the Naval Academy. More than anybody else, John knew that more kids need to see the Academy, meet people who are just as unsure as them, and realize - they have more than what it takes to be successful leaders at the Naval Academy and beyond.

Application Tips

Tackling the Essays

This is an opportunity to share your passion and envisioned impact by telling a compelling story about your future. Bring your whole story together by focusing on how you plan to pair your abilities with your passion to make an impact. Balance keeping your past in mind while not losing focus on your future impact. It is completely normal not to know your exact vision: you can still make an impact with an open mind. Our pursuit of lifelong learning is right in line with this. Great essays are authentic, clear, and packaged together with passion. Don’t forget to emphasize what you want to do and how you hope to contribute to the Holmen community wherever life takes you. The essays serve as the center of gravity for your application. Take the time to outline your answers, proof read, and revise.

Letter of Nomination

Each applicant is required to submit a letter of nomination in support of their Legacy Scholar application. The applicant can chose any coach, teacher, employer, or military leader as their nomination writer. The writer will be required to answer three standardized questions. The recommender will not need to write a separate letter of recommendation like other scholarships. The key to selecting the right nomination writer is to make sure they know you best. This is an opportunity for the selection board to see you “off the page" as the nomination writer can share who you are day to day. This helps us to assess your character and see the best you. Please Note: the applicant must download the Letter of Nomination Template for the writer to fill out and submit with their application.
